Foster Faculty Recognized as Top Researchers on FT 50 List
Yong Tan, Robert Palmatier, Terry Shevlin, Christopher Barnes, and Jarrad Harford featured on prestigious list
Earlier this year, a group of researchers published a landmark study on the science of business and economics, based on the Financial Times (FT 50) list of journals. Study authors Sunil Mithas, Alysson Silveira, and Gleb Zavadskiy set out to uncover patterns of research productivity among disciplines, journals, authors, and universities, highlighting the most prolific researchers across various disciplines.
Several Foster School of Business faculty members ranked among the top 100, recognized for their outstanding contributions to scholarly research. Professors Yong Tan, Robert Palmatier, Terry Shevlin, Christopher Barnes, and Jarrad Harford each made the list.
#21. Yong Tan, Professor and Chair of the Information Systems and Operations Management Department, ranked 21st with 46 publications. Tan ranked third in the Information Systems category.
#40. Robert Palmatier, Professor of Marketing, ranked 40th with 39 publications. In the Marketing category, Palmatier ranked sixth.
#45. Terry Shevlin, Professor Emeritus of Accounting, ranked 45th with 38 publications. Shevlin ranked first in the Accounting category. During his 25+ years at Foster, Shevlin shaped the field of corporate tax research, mentored countless scholars, and advanced accounting education.
#69. Christopher Barnes, Professor of Management, ranked 69th with 32 publications. In the Management and Organizations category, Barnes ranked 18th.
#79. Jarrad Harford, Professor of Finance and Business Economics, ranked 79th with 31 publications. Harford ranked fifth in finance.
To understand trends in academic publishing across business and economics, the researchers analyzed over 55,000 articles published between 2008 and 2022 in the 50 journals listed on the Financial Times (FT 50) list. They used data from the Web of Science, a trusted source of peer-reviewed research, to track contributions from more than 54,000 authors. Their goal was to compare how different disciplines, journals, scholars, and universities performed, based on how much they published and how often their work was cited.
The team grouped the journals into seven main business fields (Accounting, Finance, Management and Organizations, Marketing, Operations Management, Information Systems, and Economics), plus two additional categories: Multidisciplinary and Practitioner. They measured each field’s share of publications and citations over the 15 years to see which areas gained more visibility and influence in top-tier research publishing.
The Foster School congratulates these distinguished faculty members for their impactful scholarship and continued leadership in their fields. Their recognition underscores Foster’s reputation as a top-tier research institution where students learn from leading experts in business today.
